Eagles Minicamp Practice Notes: Defense ahead of offense thus far
The Philad e lphia Eagles held the first of two minicamp practices on Tuesday and I was at the NovaCare Jefferson Health Training Complex to watch the action unfold. Here’s what I observed! ATTENDANCE UPDATES ABSENT: Unlike voluntary OTAs, it’s mandatory to attend minicamp. The only player absent was Joe Tryon-Shoyinka . It’s currently unclear whether his absence was approved or if he’s subject to fines by not attending. The cost for missing Day 1 is $17,986. NOTABLY PRESENT: Lane Johnson and Jalen Carter were at practice after missing the Eagles’ two media-attended OTA practices over the past two weeks. INJURY UPDATES DID NOT PARTICIPATE Makai Lemon ( hamstring ) did not practice, as expected. Assuming he’s out again on Wednesday, which seems like a safe bet, the Eagles’ first-round pick will have missed at least four of the team’s eight total spring practices. Hardly the end of the world but not ideal. Jihaad Campbell , Grant Calcaterra , Britain Covey , Carson Steele , Chandler Martin , and Tucker Large attended practice but did not participate. Campbell, Martin, and Large were doing some rehab work off to the side while the rest of the team practiced. LIMITED PARTICIPATION Jalen Carter did not participate in team drills. Is he not 100% recovered from injury? Is the team just being extra cautious? Is this a “hold” in situation? Jonathan Greenard , Cole Wisniewski, and Drew Kendall also took part in position drills but not team drills. JALEN HURTS UPDATE: Hurts wasn’t very sharp today. Early in 7-on-7, a downfield target to DeVonta Smith with Riq Woolen trailing was overthrown and incomplete. Hurts missed a crossing DeVonta over the middle with an inaccurate pass. Hurts to DeVonta was incomplete yet again on a play where it looked like there was a tight window for the wide receiver to get the ball between Woolen and Smael Mondon Jr. Hurts was guilty of holding the ball too long on some reps to get “sacked.” One such instance might’ve wiped out what ended up being a completion to E.J. Jenkins over the middle that Hurts made by throwing against his body while rolling right. Good play if it counted, which it might not have. I wouldn’t put all of the offense’s struggles on Hurts; they’re just clearly behind the defense, which is to be expected since 1) Vic Fangio is really good, 2) it’s not unusual for defenses to be ahead of offenses at this time of year, and 3) the defense is in the third year of their system while the offense is new. Still lots of kinks to iron out. Can’t recall many, if any, times that Woolen or Quinyon Mitchell have given up catches this spring. It seems to me that Hurts is targeting Saquon Barkley more often than he has in the past. This isn’t the first offseason in recent years where some have wondered if passing to the running back could be a bigger part of the offense, so, you have to take these observations with a grain of salt. But maybe it’s truly different this time?! Barkley doesn’t have the best hands but he is very effective with the ball in them in terms of yards after catch potential. Should be a bigger part of the offense than not at all. BACKUP QUARTERBACK BATTLE (?): The Eagles have held three media-attended spring practices and Andy Dalton has been QB2 for all of them. It sure seems like Tanner McKee has been demoted to QB3. If Dalton goes up directly after Hurts again tomorrow, we’ll have even more confirmation. I don’t really get it, to be honest. Dalton obviously has more starting experience in the NFL but McKee has shown legitimate promise and I think it’s worth fostering that potential, not pushing him down the depth chart as he enters a contract year. On that note, I thought McKee looked like the better quarterback on Tuesday. McKee ripped a ball over the middle to Elijah Moore in stride for a first down and more. He found Hollywood Brown (twice, including a real tight window throw) and Samori Toure for touchdown connections. Dalton, meanwhile, got picked off by Jalyx Hu [... truncated ...]

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links … 9 NFL undrafted free agents that could make their rosters in 2026 – SB Nation Dae’quan Wright, TE, Philadelphia Eagles . The Eagles are hoping to turn around last season’s offensive disasters with a brain trust led by new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, and it would appear that you can expect multi-tight end personnel packages as a major part of that lift. Philly selected Vanderbilt tight end/big receiver Eli Stowers in the second round, and they already have Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra , so you can expect the Eagles to align with this current schematic wave. Another guy who should get an opportunity is Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright, simply because this guy just knows how to get open for big plays — kind of important for Jalen Hurts . Last season, the 6’4”, 246-pound Wright caught 39 passes on 55 targets for 635 yards and five touchdowns, and he was getting it done to all areas of the field. Moreover, Wright is a good enough inline blocker to add to his potential with his new team, as not all Eagles tight ends are great blockers (yes, this is a Grant Calcaterra reference). 2026 NFL Draft’s best UDFA fits: 1 undrafted free agent to watch on each roster – The Athletic Philadelphia Eagles: Deontae Lawson , LB, Alabama. A two-time captain at Alabama who helped keep things together after Nick Saban retired, Lawson (6-2, 226) is a long and lean off-ball linebacker with quick feet and disciplined eyes between the tackles. I’m not sure if he’ll be able to hold up physically on a down-to-down basis, but he could be a valuable special teams/rotational piece. Breaking down contract details for Eagles’ UDFA class of 2026 – NBCSP The money doesn’t always indicate how well these UDFAs are going to perform. Heck, Blankenship got one of the smallest sums of guaranteed money in his rookie class. But it at least tells us how much the Eagles had to pay to entice these players to come to Philly. This year, Ole Miss DB Kapena Gushiken and International Player Pathway program DE Joshua Weru were at the top of the class with $25,000 signing bonuses and total guarantees of $272,500 each. Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster prediction ahead of OTAs – BGN WIDE RECEIVER: DeVonta Smith , Makai Lemon, Dontayvion Wicks , Hollywood Brown , Darius Cooper (5) [11]. Smitty is more than ready to take over as WR1 with A.J. Brown soon to be traded. I don’t think it’ll take us long to realize if Lemon is equipped to be a serious contributor as a rookie or not. I’m cautiously optimistic; it’ll be nice to see evidence of his talents translating to the NFL. Wicks is an underrated player who could thrive with more opportunity in Philly than he saw with the Packers . Brown’s deep threat ability and general veteran competence makes him worth keeping around. Wicks and Brown have combined for five career special teams snaps, so, they’re probably not going to help out in that category. The Eagles need to keep around a dirty work guy or two and Cooper showed he’s capable of playing that role last year while also flashing offensive potential. Johnny Wilson was a tough cut here; he was showing promise before suffering a season-ending injury in August. Would like to see him back on the field first before assuming he’ll pick up where he left off. Elijah Moore has never really been a special teams guy and there are too many players ahead of him on offense, so, he’s more realistically looking at a practice squad spot unless there are injury issues. The Eagles could try to have Britain Covey begin the season on the practice squad, which they’ve done in the past, and use up his temporary elevations early on to be their punt returner. Doing so would buy them time to open up a spot for him if they want him to stay around for the rest of the season. The tight end is the seventh member of the team’s 2026 draft class to agree to his contract. Third-round offensive tackle Markel Bell is the only draft pick who is not yet under contract. Stowers had 62 catches for 769 yards and four touchdowns at Vanderbilt last season. The former quarterback then impressed at the Scouting Combine by setting records for a tight end in the vertical leap and broad jump. Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra are the top returning tight ends in Philadelphia. They also signed Johnny Mundt and Stone Smartt as free agents earlier in the offseason
