The re-signed Xavier Gipson to the practice squad, and moved Danny Gray to IR
The Eagles signed Gipson to the practice squad Friday. The move corresponds with the Eagles placing Danny Gray (undisclosed) on the practice squad injured list. Gipson spent time with the Eagles, Giants and Jets during the 2025 regular season, logging two catches for six yards, 319 yards on 12 kickoff returns and 86 yards on eight punt returns across seven games. Gipson's chances of being promoted to the active roster would increase if the Eagles needed another returner on game day
Odell Beckham Jr. has made the Giants’ initial 53-man roster and his No. 13 jersey is now available. Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt was among the cuts that the Giants made to get down to the roster limit. Hyatt was a 2023 third-round pick, but he only caught 36 passes over his first three NFL seasons. The Giants also waived or released quarterbacks Brandon Allen and Jake Haener; wide receivers Braxton Berrios, Dalen Cambre, Xavier Gipson, Isaiah Hodgins, and Kobe Prentice; defensive linemen Anquin Barnes, Ben Barten, Marlon Davidson, Leki Fotu, Josh Topou, and Zacch Pickens; linebackers Trace Ford, Khalid Kareem, Chandler Martin, Darius Muasau, Caleb Murphy, and Anfernee Orji; defensive backs Ugo Amadi, Beau Brade, Art Green, Raheem Layne, and J.T. Woods; offensive linemen Jarrod Gray, Brenden Jaimes, Jake Kubas, Evan Neal, Lucas Patrick, and Ryan Schernecke; running backs Damon Bankston, Grant Finley, and Eric Gray; tight ends Tanner Conner and Josiah Deguara; and kicker Ben Sauls. Cornerback Korie Black was placed on injured reserve and designated for return
The tripleheader of wide receiver signings by the New York Giants on Monday completed what is a stunning makeover at the position since the end of the 2025 season. Here is what the Giants’ wide receiver depth chart looked like in the 2025 Week 18 season finale against the Dallas Cowboys : IR — Malik Nabers , Wan’Dale Robinson Robinson spent the final week of the season on IR after crossing the 1,000-yard mark for the season the week before, the only time in his four years with the Giants that he did so. Game day roster — Darius Slayton , Ryan Miller , Jalin Hyatt , Gunner Olszewski , Dalen Cambre , Isaiah Hodgins Practice squad — Xavier Gipson , Ihmir Smith-Marsette While Nabers is the team’s No. 1 wide receiver, his uncertain status as he grinds away at rehab from a pair of surgeries for a torn ACL and other injuries makes it possible that the only wide receiver from the group above who could be on the Week 1 roster is Slayton. The Giants have added five capable veteran wide receivers in free agency. They signed Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin earlier in free agency, then struck deals with Odell Beckham Jr. , Braxton Berrios , and JuJu Smith-Schuster on Monday. They surrendered a pair of draft picks to move up in the 2026 NFL Draft and select wide receiver Malachi Fields in Round 3. Add the tight end swap on Isaiah Likely in place of Daniel Bellinger , and the Giants have transformed their receiving group into a much deeper, more experienced group for Jaxson Dart to throw to. Monday’s moves by the Giants seem only partially necessitated by Friday’s season-ending injury to Gunner Olszewski. It is entirely possible that Harbaugh and the Giants looked at the receivers after two weeks of OTAs and realized they did not have enough firepower. Let’s break down the wide receivers on the 90-man roster and see where the pieces might fit. Below, my initial expectations on who will and will not make the team, and thoughts on each player. Odell Beckham Jr. 2.0: Can the Giants get the 2023 version of OBJ? Malik Nabers — I think this is where the situation with Nabers is headed. The last time he spoke about Nabers, head coach John Harbaugh did not seem optimistic that he would be healthy enough to begin the season. Nabers did participate in the Brian Burns Charity Softball Game, but seemed to move carefully and was said to be limping. Nabers has said there was a lot going on with his knee, and he had a second “clean up” surgery this offseason. Just an educated guess, but I think one of the reasons the Giants were so aggressive on Monday in adding wide receivers is that they aren’t sure when Nabers will be ready to play. Darius Slayton — Don’t forget about the 29-year-old, now the longest-tenured Giant. He has missed spring workouts due to surgery to repair a sports hernia, but he will almost certainly be on the roster and have a role in the offense. Cutting Slayton would cost the Giants $15.749 million in dead money against the cap, and it would be stunning if they were to take that hit. Slayton did not have his best season in 2025. His 37 catches and 538 receiving yards were the second-lowest totals of his career, and his drop rate of 7.9% spiked to its highest mark since he dropped 9.9% of passes thrown to him in 2022. Still, Slayton has always shown the ability to bounce back and play himself into having a key role. Despite all the changes, that could be the case again. Darnell Mooney — Mooney’s best has been better than Slayton’s best. Mooney has 1,000-yard and 900-yard receiving seasons on his resume. Slayton’s best is 770 yards. Mooney has 81, 64, and 61-catch seasons across his six-year career. Slayton’s best is 50 catches. Mooney, 28, had his best season — 81 catches, 1,055 yards — playing for Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy with the Chicago Bears in 2021. The Giants would take a $3 million cap hit if they cut Mooney. If they traded him, which seems unlikely, that hit would reduce to $1.785 million. Moone [... truncated ...]

We are now in the throes of the NFL offseason, and the vast majority of roster building has been done. So, let’s begin going position-by-position through the New York Giants roster to see if they are better, worse, or perhaps the same as they were in 2025. We will begin at wide receiver. Key additions: Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin , Malachi Fields Key losses: Wan’Dale Robinson Roster : Darius Slayton , Gunner Olszewski , Malik Nabers , Darnell Mooney, Ryan Miller , Jalin Hyatt , Isaiah Hodgins , Xavier Gipson , Malachi Fields , Beaux Collins , Dalen Cambre , Calvin Austin III *** Rookies in bold For starters, because they should have some version of their best player, Malik Nabers for more than three-plus games. Even if Nabers isn’t fully back to 2024 form, he will still make some plays and be a weapon defenses need to pay extra attention to. His presence alone should make the group better than it was a year ago. Next, because they have depth. Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin are legitimate NFL receivers, and Malachi Fields adds youth, size and potential to help the passing and running games. The Giants shouldn’t be stuck playing Jalin Hyatt, or trolling the NFL scrap heap for players like Ray Ray McCloud . Maybe Nabers won’t be healthy, or will just be a shell of the star he was in 2024. Maybe the Giants will miss Wan’Dale Robinson more than we think. Maybe Mooney and Austin aren’t the upgrades we think they are, and Fields turns out to be a big, slow guy who can’t get open and can’t catch. Maybe Darius Slayton has one of those years he is prone to where catching the ball seems optional. Maybe tight end Isaiah Likely , who is expected to often function as a big slot receiver, isn’t up to the task of being more than the secondary target he was with the Baltimore Ravens . SHOULD be better. They should have Malik Nabers for more than three-plus, and they should be deeper than they were a year ago. If Darnell Mooney remotely close to the 1,000-yard season he had playing for Matt Nagy with the Chicago Bears in 2021, that would be massive. You never know what will happen with injuries, but when I look down the depth chart I feel better about what I see than I did a year ago
Drops: Xavier Gipson
The Giants signed Gipson from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday ahead of Sunday's game against the Cowboys, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports. Gipson signed with the Giants' practice squad after being waived by the Eagles, and the wide receiver will get his first shot with his new NFC East team in Week 18. The 24-year-old is set to be the secondary kick and punt returner behind Gunner Olszewski, and he will likely see most of his reps Sunday with the special-teams unit
The Giants have signed wide receiver and kick returner Xavier Gipson to their practice squad. This move adds depth to the Giants' receiving corps and special teams unit. Gipson was previously released by the Eagles and has had stints with the Giants and Jets this season
The Giants signed Gipson to their practice squad Wednesday, Dan Salomone & Matt Citak of the team's official site reports. Gipson has had a roller-coaster season. He began the campaign with the Jets before being waived Sept. 10. The wideout subsequently was claimed by the Giants, who then released him nine days later. Gipson ultimately landed with the Eagles and got into five games with them, totaling two catches on two targets for six yards while also contributing as a kick and punt returner before being cut Dec. 7. He'll now get a second look from the Giants, and if he's elevated for Sunday's matchup versus Washington, Gipson could be deployed as the team's lead return man, as Gunner Olszewski is currently in concussion protocol and was unable to practice Wednesday
New York is expected to sign Gipson to the practice squad Wednesday, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports. Gipson was cut by Philadelphia on Monday and had previously missed Week 14 due to a shoulder injury. He practiced in full prior to being waived by the Eagles, however, so the return man and depth wideout is healthy as he's now on track to join the Giants
The Eagles announced they have waived Gipson on Sunday. Gipson missed the Eagles' Week 13 loss to the Bears due to a shoulder injury and was limited in practice until Friday, when he was a full participant. The 24-year-old had two receptions for six yards in six games this season
