Last week, Panthers General Manager Dan Morgan said that the team had “no plans” to bring in another quarterback even after the retirement of Will Grier. But, plans can change. Carolina is bringing in former Buccaneers backup Kyle Trask for a workout, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. Trask, a second-round pick in 2021, finished his rookie contract with the Buccaneers before re-signing with the club last offseason. They then released him during roster cuts. Trask then spent time with the Falcons’ practice squad in the second half of the season. Trask has familiarity with Panthers head coach Dave Canales, who was the Bucs’ offensive coordinator in 2023. Carolina currently has Kenny Pickett and Haynes King at QB on its roster behind starter Bryce Young

It didn't take the 31-year-old long to begin the next chapter of his NFL career. Grier is set to join the Cowboys coaching staff for the 2026 season as an offensive assistant, according to ESPN's Todd Archer . The 2019 third-round pick was offered a position on Brian Schottenheimer's staff after spending the 2025 NFL season on the Cowboys' practice squad, according to multiple reports. Grier initially declined and joined the Panthers in free agency just ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. The expectation was the 31-year-old would battle undrafted rookie Haynes King for the third-string role behind Bryce Young and Kenny Pickett . Instead, Grier reversed course in advance of Carolina's first training camp practice. But even after retiring, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott hinted his former teammate could soon join Dallas' coaching staff with a post to his Instagram story. "Never retired, just switching lanes," Prescott wrote over a photo of himself and Grier. "Congrats, my brother." Now, Grier will join the ever-growing pipeline of former NFL quarterbacks among the league's coaching rankings. NFL 2026: 1 key storyline for each team entering training camp Grier made just two starts during his NFL career, both coming during his rookie season in 2019 with the Panthers. Grier completed 28 of 52 passes (53.8%) for 228 yards and four interceptions, good for a 33.2 passer rating. Grier finished his career having earned just over $4.9 million, per Spotrac.com . Most of Grier's money came via the four-year, $3.85 million rookie contract he signed with the Panthers after being selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The Panthers’ roster went down to three quarterbacks when Will Grier retired earlier this month. The plan is now to hold that number at the position through training camp. In his Wednesday press conference, General Manager Dan Morgan told reporters that Carolina has “no plans” right now to bring in a fourth QB. “Obviously, wish Will and his family the best,” Morgan said. “In terms of his career, just playing as long as he did — just wish him the best moving forward.” So, Carolina will go through training camp with Kenny Pickett and Haynes King behind starter Bryce Young at quarterback. Grier, 31, had rejoined Carolina as a free agent in April. The Panthers had brought him into the league as a third-round pick back in 2019. Hello CSR! Welcome to Brian Answers, part two of your weekly Panthers fan mailbag for everyone! Another week down in this long offseason, but the discussions are ongoing with you guys, our community. Let’s dive right in with all your questions! @WTMealey: What’s a tougher waiting period draft to training camp or training camp to week 1? It used to be the NFL Draft to training camp when I was younger, but I think now its definitely training camp to week 1 of the regular season. During the dead zone period after the NFL Draft, there’s not much to talk about short of roster projections and reviewing the previous season, and acquisitions during the off-season. There really isn’t a whole lot to think about during that time so I can focus on other aspects of life. I think once training camp starts happening, the anticipation for the regular season really starts to build as we fans are fed morsels of information to wet the appetite. The preseason doesn’t help either, because once you’ve been around the block enough, you know what you’re seeing in the preseason really has no bearing on the regular season short of the back end roster guys who might make the 53. So that’s my answer and I am sticking to it. Carolinacloggy: Brian my man, you have the most Dutch last name i’ve ever heard! Welcome to CSR, friend! Revshawn: Does Fanfest count as the start of the NFL season? I think it certainly does, it is the starter as we really ramp up into “we’re almost there” time. Mozzie11: Is the golden ago of qb’ing over? Brady , Manning , Rogers, et al giving way to a time of qb’s with flaws and very few HOF candidates. Mahommes is heading to the HOF but has been heading down hill over the last several years but might have some more good years. Allen just got voted by execs as the top qb but has not won anything of consequence yet. Jackson is an ex MVP but has a number of major flaws passing wise and sucks in the playoffs. Hurts – not so much. Mayes has had a promising start but there is a lot of time needed to see how he shakes out. If you step back and look at it that the league has no/few true elite qb’s, does it change the way a team should approach team building? I think the approach now needs to be more team focused than anything, at least for those teams drafting a QB to be “the guy”. Quarterbacks don’t come out as pro-ready as they did a decade ago, partially because of the way college offenses run now and also partially because QBs often shift to different colleges way more often now. I don’t think we’re done with having several elite caliber quarterbacks in the NFL, but I think most situations will require a little more development than they used to for a quarterback to cement himself as “elite”. I think the big difference now is that you’re very rarely going to be able to just draft a quarterback high with a bad team and expect a quick turnaround. And teams need to plan for those growing pains over time. Good_Ol_Boy: How old were you when you went in person to your first NFL game? I would have been 13. Colts vs Chargers , December 26th 2004. My brother and I spent most of our younger years in Kentucky and Tennessee , so Peyton Manning was all the rage. We went and saw Manning break the touchdown pass record. This was before I had really gotten into football, but it was still quite a game to see with my parents. Great memory. Robholland211: Do you expect TMac to break 1000 yards again this season? Will Grier 's NFL journey has come to an end. The 31-year-old quarterback, who bounced around the bottom of depth charts across the league, retired Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers announced. Originally a third-round pick by the Panthers in 2019, Grier appeared in two games that season – accounting for the only regular-season action of his NFL career. He played collegiately at Florida and West Virginia. After his first stint with the Panthers, Grier went on to make stops with the Dallas Cowboys (2021 to 2022 and 2024 to 2025), Cincinnati Bengals (2023), New England Patriots (2023) and Los Angeles Chargers (2023). He did not appear in a game for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024 and was cut halfway through the season but received a Super Bowl ring anyway. Reacts Results: Fans want a QB2 battle
Last week we asked y’all how the second quarterback spot would shake out during training camp. The Carolina Panthers have three guys vying to back up Bryce Young between Will Grier , Haynes King , and Kenny Pickett. All of them have stories to root for and all of them have reasons to doubt why they’ll make a career in the NFL. Grier, unsurprisingly, has fans the least excited this season. The Charlotte-area native began his career with the Panthers in 2019, before being cut after the 2021 Sam Darnold trade. That was the end of the Ron Rivera era and the start of the Matt Rhule fiasco. He has since spent time with five other NFL teams. He clearly has shown something in practice that teams are willing to keep taking a chance on, but most fans are not ready to revisit the memories stirred up by Grier’s return. The hopes of most fans rest either in pedigree or potential. This seems about right for this portion of the off season. Pickett was the 20th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons struggling to put it all together with the Pittsburgh Steelers . After the Steelers signed Russell Wilson in 2024, Pickett requested what became the first of many trades. He was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles , who traded him to the Cleveland Browns , who traded him to the Las Vegas Raiders. That took him through 2025 and the end of his rookie contract and up to his signing this off season with the Panthers. Long story short, he seems a serviceable back up, but folks should pump the breaks if they think he’s going to compete for anything beyond the number two spot. For all that Pickett is a known quantity at this point, King is nothing but unheralded potential. He was an electric, dual-threat quarterback for Georgia Tech (a school that is no longer synonymous with the triple-option), but he wasn’t quite successful enough to garner much draft attention. For all that he was a fun college quarterback, the fact that he went undrafted should give anyone pause in forecasting his future in an already quarterback hungry league. That said, some folks are excited about his potential as a Taysom Hill-type role for the Panthers. Anything can happen in training camp and the preseason, but my expectation would be for the Pickett to win the back up job and King to make a home for himself on the practice squad. With fierce competition at wide receiver and cornerback, it seems unlikely that Dave Canales and Dan Morgan are going to find room on the 53-man roster for a third quarterback.
