We often turn to strength of schedule as a tool in determining a player's potential for success over the course of a season. In this study, we retreated to a dark corner of the fantasy library and compiled defensive data from 2015 to 2025, in an effort to see if fantasy points allowed to each position correlated strongly, somewhat, or not at all from one year to the next, hoping for a sticky stat or two to sink our teeth into. Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2026 NFL season Below is a position-by-position analysis of the best and worst defenses in terms of half-PPR fantasy points allowed last season, and what it all potentially means for 2026. When examining year-to-year fantasy points allowed across all positions, points allowed to quarterbacks had the highest correlation coefficient of 0.27, which is still on the lower end of moderate. The top-five defenses against signal-callers repeated their performance 30% of the time the next season, with an average finish of DEF13. On the other side of the spectrum, the defenses in the bottom five versus quarterbacks ended up there again 20% of the time, with an average ending rank of DEF22. Repeat offenders after the basement spot in 2024, the Cowboys struggled across the board against signal callers in 2025, and it wasn't even close. Dallas allowed the most passing yards (4,521) and the most passing touchdowns (35), they surrendered the highest number of rushing touchdowns to QBs (8), and the third-most rushing yards to the position (398). The Jets were tied with Dallas for the most passing touchdowns yielded, which is not ideal, but somehow they failed to intercept the QB even once throughout the entire 2025 season. Not one pick. The Commanders, Bucs and Titans were all pretty balanced in their defensive ineptness last season across both passing and rushing metrics. 2026 Outlook: The Commanders are likely to end up here again this season despite some efforts to improve, with the addition of Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson as EDGE rushers, as well as their seventh overall pick, Ohio State's Sonny Styles, who will replace Bobby Wagner at LB. Questions remain, particularly at cornerback. The Jets are also likely to appear here at this time next year, but they did make some changes to help stifle enemy QBs, with a pair of new edge-rushers in free agent acquisition Joseph Ossai and No. 2 overall pick David Bailey. Some new tackles are also in the mix with David Onyemata and T'Vondre Sweat now in New York. Right now, it's not looking fantastic for any of these five defenses to climb much farther in 2026. Fantasy points allowed — best defenses The Vikings' defense went from fifth in 2024 to first against the QB position last season, yielding the second-fewest passing yards and touchdowns, along with being tied for first in the lowest rushing touchdown total to signal callers, at just one. L.A. was in the top 10 in 2024 but climbed up to second last year, thanks to the third-most interceptions, along with the third-fewest passing touchdowns and the fourth-lowest passing yards surrendered. The Bills shut down the pass last year, with just 170 air yards per contest, the lowest in the NFL, while the Texans and Browns were fairly well balanced, ranking in the top 10 in nearly all defensive categories versus signal callers. 2026 Outlook : The Texans, Vikings and Chargers could end up near the top again in 2026 and are all top 10 fantasy defenses in 4for4's early ranks. The Browns have been dominant for the last two seasons under play-caller Jim Schwartz, who is now gone, so they may take a step or two back, but still have the talent to be a top-10 defense. Visit 4for4 for more fantasy football analysis The running back position proved the second-highest year-to-year correlation in terms of FPA at .22, which makes sense as the good teams tend to remain that way, and game script is extremely important for running back production. Earlier today, I compared the draft-pick cost for the Bills and Patriots to acquire DJ Moore and A.J. Brown respectively via trades this offseason. Now, I’ll be stacking Brown and Moore against each other as receivers on the field. In the draft-pick piece, I labeled Moore as “a half-tier below” Brown for the entirety of the time they’ve spent together in the NFL (since 2019). Of course, there’s no such thing as definitive, universally accepted quality tiers at any position in the NFL, so I wanted to provide you with everything imaginable to compare and contrast these now division rival receivers. A few of these statistics were featured in the original article, but I’ve added one metric and put them all into a table for convenience: (mtf = missed tackles forced, ctc = contested-catch, and fd = first down) That feels like Moore is a “half-tier” behind Brown, doesn’t it? Now, I am not the world’s biggest Jalen Hurts advocate, yet there’s no mistaking that Brown has had better quarterbacks throwing him the football to date in the NFL than Moore has — revitalized Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee and Hurts in Philadelphia . Compare that to Moore, who, as a rookie caught most of his passes from 29-year-old Cam Newton . The next year, Kyle Allen started 12 games for Carolina. Then, 2020 was Year 1 with Joe Brady as the Panthers OC, and Teddy Bridgewater was Carolina’s starter. In 2021, 11 starts for Sam Darnold . In 2022, the Matt Rhule Panthers rolled out a triumvirate of passers — Baker Mayfield , P.J. Walker , and Darnold. Of course, Moore then was traded to the Chicago Bears, and went for over 1,300 yards with Justin Fields throwing him the football before back-to-back seasons with Caleb Williams at the helm. It’s impossible to quantify the impact quarterback play has had on these two receivers, yet is nonetheless worth mentioning. Regarding Brown and Moore’s play against man coverage — which of course has been a major bugaboo for the Bills receivers lately: Since 2022, Moore saw 479 targets in the regular season. Brown received 521. When it comes to size, Moore and Brown are two strapping wideouts. Brown is lsted at 6’1” and 226 pounds. Moore is listed at 6’0” and 213. And they’re very comparable athletes. There’s no way to know much the athleticism has changed for these two since they’ve been in the NFL, but here is the side-by-side of their pre-draft workout figures: Reputation-wise, Brown is clearly ahead of Moore. He has three Second-Team All-Pro distinctions that he earned after the 2022, 2023, and 2024 seasons. Moore doesn’t have any. Brown has a Super Bowl ring, but of course, despite their exponentially increasing value to the NFL game, “WR Winz” are not really a thing. And it’s not specifically Moore’s fault he just made his playoff debut last season with the Bears. He did have 11 receptions for 116 yards and two scores on 16 targets in those two postseason contests. Moore and Brown are less than three months apart in age, with similar builds, athleticism, and play styles. They rock post-catch, win vs. man coverage, and are reliable reeling in the football in traffic. Individually, they’ve had similar productivity to date, with Brown accumulating more volume on better teams with better quarterbacks. And because they were injected into what should be a heated, tightly contested AFC East rivalry between Super Bowl contenders, from now on, it will be difficult to mention one receiver without quickly discussing the other
The biggest value that Thursday night’s NFL schedule release and the subsequent opening lines from sportsbooks provide are the added data points to help us understand what the betting market thinks of all 32 teams, as we hone our preparation for the season. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few betting opportunities along the way, as we look at the early board with one goal in mind: Secure the extensive closing line value that often occurs, considering how much can happen to move said lines between now and kickoff. In order to achieve that, we’ve got a small checklist for each of the available games to bet on: Value from our projections at THE WINDOW , based on information already gleaned from futures markets Finding matchups between a team with upside to their rating against teams with downside to theirs Capturing “key” numbers now, knowing that it will take a significant change in circumstances for the bet to lose value in a big way Ideally, we bank a handful of tickets that we’ll be pleasantly surprised to find have gained considerably more valuable, when we turn the page to a specific week of the season. All while not putting too much of a dent in our bankroll, which should be relatively dormant during the offseason. Find NFL tickets on Gametime | More NFL team schedules Here are five wagers to make right now: It’s not exactly a Week 1 headliner, but value doesn’t care about TV ratings, and taking the Titans under a field goal should age pretty well. Even if it doesn’t, most around the NFL would say that the two teams that lost the most expected value because of coaching in 2025 were the Jets and the Titans. Well, one team replaced their head coach, and the other didn’t. Optimism for the Jets translates to a modest 5.5-win projection, but their big move was to acquire quarterback Geno Smith — and no bettor wanted anything to do with the Raiders at the end of Smith’s tenure last season in Las Vegas . Just because the win total is low, doesn’t mean there isn’t room to be worse than the projection. As for the Titans, they were lost with Brian Callahan, and disinterested after he was fired. That’s not going to fly under Robert Saleh. QB Cam Ward will have better talent around him, and a better plan with a legitimate offensive coordinator in Brian Daboll. While that wouldn’t be enough to like the Titans against most teams in Week 1, a home game against the Jets is a soft start, as we have them projected as 3.9-point favorites. Bet: Titans -2.5 (-110) At the beginning of the 2025 season, the Commanders were rated like a team that would beat an average NFL team around 60% of the time. Then Jayden Daniels got hurt, Washington ’s season came apart and the betting market was forced to guess what the Commanders’ power rating should be with Marcus Mariota , and then Josh Johnson at the helm. Meanwhile, the Colts went from being rated around 10% below a league-average NFL team, to perceived as a playoff contender, after a 7-1 start. Even before a resurgent QB Daniel Jones got hurt in Jacksonville , the Colts had dropped three of four, needing a comeback win in overtime overseas to avoid what could have eventually been a nine-game losing streak to end the season. If that’s the case, Washington could find its way back into the playoff-contender level at which they began 2025. Meanwhile, there’s no guarantee the Colts do the same, since they needed an all-world start from Jonathan Taylor last season, and a schedule where only two of those seven wins came against above-average opponents — the Chargers and Broncos (thanks to a dubious personal foul call on a missed last-second field goal that gave the Colts a redo). Let’s grab the Commanders after shopping around here, predicting that, if nothing else, they’ll be laying points [... truncated ...]
